There aren't many photos, but I am in regular contact with Camp Bilxoi in Sweden. After a long holiday Biloxi is slowly coming back in training. Wearing his saddle, being long reined etc. As there has been a lot of - literal - horseplay and romping an equitherapist is checking him over before Eva hops on. In addition the dentist is due soon too. But, for now life is all about food, hanging out with friends and playing with Eva. Who reports that Biloxi is as enthusiastic as he always has been, always up for anything, coming to meet her at the gate if she calls him.

Tandem-trening

After having walked around for a while, appreciating that Sioux is almost as responsive as she was last time I rode her (wonderfulamazingfabulous) I decided I might as well include Santee. So I put the lead rope through his halter, and introduced him to a new aspect of leading. And I cannot help but brag, because they both did so well. We could change directions, stop, back up, turn and walk in a figure eight around the fences that were stood there. It went ever so smoothly. Dismounted, and let Sioux do her own thing, while I worked with Santee a little longer. He thinks most things are fun, and does his best. Definitely cut from the same cloth as his big brother!
Forundret Flekkulf

Santee couldn't believe his eyes. He wasn't frightened, but terribly curious as to what on earth I was doing. Santee has the patience of an angel, with him and me both, but she seemed quite happy when I informed him that I was in charge, and he couldn't clamber all over her. Sioux moved very choppy at first, but then her movements improved so rapidly and noticeably that I think it might be as much stress due to Santee as her having to warm up. Not that she feels sound, she just feels OK and moves willingly.
Jeg fikk sitte på!

She's a big horse, and I need a mounting block. And if Sioux doesn't want me on, she just stands with her head closest to me so I can't get on. It's been almost a year since she had anyone on her back, so I had no idea how she'd react. Especially when she stood perfectly the first time I asked, only for me to realize the mounting block was too low. I put a piece of wood on top to give me an extra inch, and managed to get on. Not very elegant, but Sioux didn't seem to mind. And the only one watching was Santee, and he would have been flabbergasted regardless.

Speke og store

The horses were extremely active in the paddock, so I was surprised by how much energy they had left when we turned them loose. Sioux and Santee were all over the place, and obviously enjoyed letting off steam. I worked Santee a bit in the leadrope, and Sioux loose, but mostly they just got to run around before we turned them in. Katrin visited with us, and she took the photos too. Always a treat to have her visit, and nice to see how much the horses enjoy being fussed over and groomed. Also, it's interesting to see the horses through her eyes, like how much Santee has grown. He's already completely relaxed about being in a separate box until the evening feed. Such a big boy!

We have been, and are still, very happy at our yard. But the yard owners only have mares, and are unable to provide Santee with companions after he is weaned, so I've been looking for an alternative for him. In addition I have travel almost 110 kilomters each way to the yard, which means I'm not able to visit as often as I like. I've found a new yard where Santee will have a handful of cool uncles, and possibly some other colts, to play with, plus there's room for Sioux AND my travel will be reduced by 3/4, so we are moving.
It will be sad to leave the lovely horses and people at Holtet, but we know the gang at the new yard too, as it will be run by Trine who had Biloxi at bootcamp last summer. She and her beau John-Anders have taken over the running of a yard, and we're looking forward to being part of their new adventure. Read more about Trine and see photos of the yard at http://www.trinebohnsdalen.no/blog/?p=2441

Avvenningen er i gang

It's taken longer than planned to get started with the weaning. But I'd rather wait and do it in a manner that's better for both. When the horses are turned in Santee is put in the box next to Sioux, and stays there until the evening feed. Then he's put back with her to drink milk, eat and rest together like they normally do. But, after a little while he will be put back into the neighbouring box once he's had his little nightcap, so they're only really together for a short while in the evening. He will be sleeping alone in other words. The next step - still some weeks away - will be to turn them out separately as well. Sioux will be producing much less milk, and after a while do as she did with Biloxi. Stop letting him drink. So I expect that we will be done with a slow, but horse-friendly, weaning in by mid- or late March.

Ha det tante Melis

When I took this photo I was thinking how cute it was that Santee tried to play with Melissa, just like he did with Biloxi. And how sweet Melissa let him. Now, I have a lump in my throat, because it turns out it was the last time I got to see her. She was old, and hadn't been sound for years. So this became a last farewell to a dignified and darling little pony who was allowed to leave before things got too bad... Rest In Peace Melissa. You were a sweetheart!

Hallmosjon for flekkene

Like yesterday, the horses were much calmer, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy their little session. I was alone, and so had to lead them both down and up, and was very pleased that this presented absolutely no problem. Even when I had to let Sioux walk off in front of us, while Santee and I stopped, turned and closed the gate, it was no issue. When we neared Sioux again, he shook his head and showed me he expected to be turned loose. So I didn't. Rather we walked around for a little while, with him impressing me with how instantly he got the point. I did let them run about a few minutes, then worked with Sioux a bit, before putting the lead rope on Santee again. He was extremely well behaved when we were walking, but when I asked for trot he tried to bound off three times before realizing he had to stay with me in a calm jog. Except for trying to bite the rope now and again he's amazingly responsive and gentle. We even had fun walking over, between, and even backing over the poles that were out, and he's ever so good!
Og da var vinteren her!

They would, of course, prefer green grass, but when you can't have that snow is definitely the best option. Mud and frozen ground have both created problems no one can solve, and the slippery going of late hasn't been much fun for the horses. So, even if the going is a bit heavy in the snow, it's stable and the horses move around much more than what they've done in a long time. Fingers crossed the snow will stay until Easter!

Endelig kom snøen!

The weather wasn't nice, for the four wheel drive nor four leggeds, but we're still happy that the winter is finally here. Turned the horses loose in the indoor school, and they were much calmer than they have been. A few jumps when I unrugged them, and then Sioux jogged for 5-10 minutes. Santee did few more rounds, but even he was noticeably less active. Though their rugs were pretty wet, the horses weren't, and I had spare rugs ready for tomorrow. They both got a proper groom, and it's so nice that they both really enjoy it. Quality time.

One bay gelding is moving from Sweden to Norway, and it's not Biloxi! There was an opening with supertrainer - 13 times Scandinavian Champion trainer since 1997 - Wido Neuroth and the shareholders went for it. I'm sad that he's not staying with Roy Kvisla, as was planned, but it'll be extremely exciting to see how he does. And, of course, it's fun that he's so close. I expect I'll be able to update with new photos soon.
That things don't turn out how you expect doesn't mean they don't turn out well!

Just a photo to show exactly how good Santee is at being tied up, and stand, even when the photographer leaves to get something on the hayloft.

The camera isn't able to capture much, but everything els is as it should be when the pintos get to stretch their legs a little. Sioux is fresh, but Santee is a bit much, so I was happy that the yard owner was able to help me lead them down safely. The horses were very happy to run at liberty. Sioux moves freely and evenly, if not completely soundly, while Santee is a bit all over the place. There'd been jumping today, so there were poles and fences out, making it extra fun for the littlest one. Sioux seemed to enjoy them too, walking the poles a few times, even if Santee kept getting in her way. After a good 30 mins Sioux was ready to go in, and leading them both went smoothly, as did the grooming and care.

Såvidt innom

I mucked out, put half a banana in each crib, and gave them a big dose of love and attention (and a tiny bit of grooming) before I had to rush off. First to make a pick-up at the airport, and then off to work. Not much horsing around for me, but with a yard that runs smoothly that's no problem.

Løse i ridehallen for første gang

It's so icy out that the horses don't move more than they have to. Santee is full of pent up energy, but sensible enough not to try to run on the ice. However, the surface in the indoor school is finally set so we can turn the horses loose there if we wish. And I wished!
Once inside Santee was a little wide eyed at his shadows on the wall, but calmed down rapidly. Or, rather, felt secure enough to completely abandon himself; running, jumping, rearing, bucking and nagging mum. And watching Sioux was a huge pleasure. She's nowhere near 100%, and won't canter on the left leg, but she was happy to move, and moved much more freely than she does outside. We even played a little, which she seemed to enjoy, if not as much as I did.
The only downer is not having a camera that can capture the indoor action. Fingers crossed it'll be back from repairs soon!

Uh-oh!

Santee's tummy is worse again, so there goes the theory about him ingesting bacteria from the ground in the mild weather. Malin had some thoughts about sensitivity to protein, and after checking the content in Sioux's hard feed I've cut down on her protein intake. I don't want to reduce Santee's access to forage, and the handful of hard feed he gets probably isn't the problem. But Sioux has extremely "strong" milk, so I'm hopeful that a change in her regime will affect Santee's tummy in the right way. Fingers crossed!

Velkomstkomiteen

I intended to take some photos of the two in the evening light, but how can I mind them ruining the shot when it's because they come over to say hi as soon as they see me?
Leke med Lafrieda eller Lita?

Santee would like to play with them both, but there's no doubt that Lita appreciates his overtures more than Lafrieda does. However, it's a natural, and healthy, part of his upbringing, even if it does look a bit scary.

Gratulerer med dagen Fru Mor!

The worlds best horse-mum and her sons would like to send birthday greetings to the worlds best human mum. They really appreciate that you're celebrating by leaving an extra large amount of big, juicy carrots for them...

Lita, Santee og pinnen

The horses are thrilled that they've got a huge branch to gnaw on. Santee perhaps most of all, and Lita is wondering what on earth is so interesting...
Endelig litt snø...

Finally a little snow, and the days are longer and not as dark. No wonder my lovely pinto ponies are so happy and lovely and gorgeous and fabulous... And for anyone wondering the two bays are doing great too. Tabasco isn't just back on form after the castration, he's training better than ever. Biloxi isn't training yet, but loving his life as the worlds happiest and most playful herd leader.

Litt mindre magemål faktisk!

Sioux's pyjamas are in the laundry, so I found another rug for her to wear. She hasn't worn this one since we moved yard. Probably not since March. It's 7' and one size up from her regular 6'9", and the girths were extended to a maximum. So it's nice to see that I had to take them in at least 30 cm, even if she's in the "worst" shape she's ever been in. But the belly, even low and wide, isn't quite as huge as feared.

Veloppdragne flekkiser

Santee happily stood cross tied whilst grooming. So I was a bit surprised to hear "noise" when I left the room for a minute. But when I came back out he wasn't being naughty, just moving carefully around to be able to scratch himself while still tied up. He did it a couple more times and I was able to observe how accepting he is of being tied up, and how he just works around the problem. After much work Sioux was exceptionally well behaved by the time she became a full time mum. With her priority shifting to the foals, that's been left by the wayside as it were. But we refreshed some basics, with her responding to my trust with perfect behaviour. Fab!

Fortsatt ponni...

Still a "pony", even if he has been growing like weed. He's almost 14'1" to the withers, and a bit taller in the croup. He's a little long in the back, so not exactly perfect exteriorwise. Having said that, I think I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would describe him as anything but adorable.

Det beste vannet...

er det du deler med andre. Santee og Sioux har to bøtter.
Water tastes best when you share it. Santee and Sioux have two buckets, but they like sharing from the same bucket. Especially when I'm filling it so the water is "lively".
